Jane Fonda playfully questioned Barbra Streisand’s tribute to Robert Redford at the Academy Awards, noting her own deeper history with the late actor.
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Fonda acknowledged the recent losses in the entertainment industry, but quickly shifted the conversation to Streisand’s memorial segment. “I wanna know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford,” she remarked, “She only made one movie with him. I made four. I have more to say.”
Fonda then elaborated on her affection for Redford, calling him “the most gorgeous human being” and praising his impact on independent cinema. She starred alongside Redford in several films, including The Chase (1966), Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Electric Horseman (1979), and Our Souls at Night (2017).
Streisand honored Redford as “thoughtful and bold” and performed a segment of their duet, “The Way We Were.” She previously sang the same song in 2013 to honor composer Marvin Hamlisch.
Fonda’s lighthearted dig highlights the complex dynamics within Hollywood, where personal history and professional collaborations intersect with public recognition. The moment underscores how even friendly rivalries and inside jokes can emerge during high-profile events like the Oscars.
