As my daughter turned one in August, I’m now surrounded by thoroughly-tested toys and accessories that make excellent gifts this holiday season. As a shopping editor and with a generous group of friends and family eager to keep my daughter entertained, I’m also fortunate to have tested a lot of up-and-coming baby gear, including collaborations like the Ms. Rachel x Nugget set and the new Toniebox 2.
Here are my top picks for worth-it toys, nursery essentials, and skincare products designed specifically for one-year-olds (some are better suited for older toddlers, but I’m noting those).
Toys
Step2 Push Around Buggy
This push car is a favorite of mine and my daughter’s. We started using it around her first birthday, and it’s still the perfect way for us to get around the park or take walks. She even gets to “drive” it during trick-or-treating. Unlike a stroller, it allows her to feel more involved and practice steering, complete with a squeaky horn. It’s a toy that grows with her.
Toniebox 2 Bundle
The Toniebox is a popular choice for parents seeking a fun and educational way to engage their kids without screen time. I appreciate that it provides entertainment without requiring the TV to be on. Watching her follow along with storytimes and songs (especially with the Ms. Rachel Tonie) is delightful. The bundle offers the Toniebox, plus three Tonies, providing great value.
Melissa & Doug® Ms. Rachel™ Wooden Song Peg Puzzle
This puzzle features Ms. Rachel mainstays like the yellow bus and bunnies, complete with songs for each piece. It has easy-to-grasp handles, perfect for little hands. Right now, my daughter enjoys listening to the songs, but we’ll gradually work on lifting and replacing the puzzle pieces as she develops her motor skills.
Clixo Tiny & Mighty Magnetic Building Set
For introducing magnet toys, the Clixo set is designed for younger children. It has nine pieces that can be twisted and snapped into various shapes. While I supervise playtime, it’s a safe and engaging way for her to explore sensory toys.
Eric Carle The Very Hungry Caterpillar Sensory Bin
Inspired by my daughter’s love for sensory sand, I got her a kit themed after The Very Hungry Caterpillar. She recognizes the characters and shapes from the book and enjoys the texture of the sand. It’s a reminder that sometimes the simplest things bring the most joy.
Laugh & Learn Smart Stages Learn & Serve Coffee Cafe
I recently bought this on a whim because my daughter loves pressing buttons on my espresso machine, and she loves it! Even at her age, she’s so into pressing buttons and “serving” me cups of coffee. This toy has original, educational songs that play when buttons are pressed.
Baby’s Room
Delta Children babyGap Sherpa Bear Chair
This sherpa bear chair is my daughter’s go-to spot for watching shows and practicing standing. It’s a cute addition to her room, and available in five colors.
The Nugget x Ms. Rachel
This collaboration is a great investment. It helps her learn to climb and balance, and she loves the Ms. Rachel shapes and colors. It’s a toy that “grows with you,” since she’ll find new ways to play with it as she gets older.
Lalo The Play Kit
For stylish and easy-to-clean baby furniture, the Lalo kit includes a table and bucket chairs. It’s perfect for coloring and playing with more involved toys.
House of Noa Little Nomad Play Mat
If you’re looking to upgrade to a cuter and more durable playmat, the House of Noa puzzle-like mat is a great choice. It’s ultra cushioned and easy to clean.
Loulou Lollipop Muslin Fitted Crib Sheet
This crib sheet is ultra soft, stretchy, and breathable. It matches my daughter’s woodland creature theme and makes laundry day a little easier.
Clothes & Accessories
Ten Little First Walkers
These sneakers are supportive and provide stability as she learns to walk. The sizing system helps ensure a good fit.
Hanna Andersson Baby Holiday French Terry Sweatshirt
For special occasions, a nice sweater from Hanna Andersson is a splurge worth making. The oversized fit ensures it lasts, and the designs are adorable.
Little Sleepies Frosty Fair Isle Two-Piece Pajama Set
I’m buying more two-piece pajama sets now, and I appreciate the soft fabrics and pretty designs.
Bathtime & Bedtime
Coterie Bun Balm
Coterie’s ingredient list prioritizes Baby’s skin health, making it a great choice for protecting her skin.
Noodle & Boo Bouncing Baby Bubbles for Sensitive Skin and Hypoallergenic
This bubble bath formula smells great and keeps Baby’s skin soft and supple.
