From Lifeless to Lovely: 1879 Kitchen Gets a Modern Pink Transformation

A homeowner completely revitalized her outdated 1879 kitchen with a bold, modern makeover. Daniela Sanchez, founder of Rose House Talent Agency, sought to escape the “lifeless” feel of her original space, opting for a European-inspired design centered around a striking pink island. The renovation cost roughly $60,000 and took six months as part of a larger townhouse upgrade.

The Before: A Kitchen Lost in Time

The original kitchen was described as severely dated. The layout was awkward, with a closed-off, dark dining area and mismatched tiling used for both the floor and countertops. Dark, heavy cabinets and faded yellow-beige walls contributed to the oppressive atmosphere. According to Sanchez, the room “felt like the energy was being sucked out of you.”

This matters because many older homes suffer from similar issues: inefficient layouts, outdated materials, and a general lack of modern functionality. The cost of inaction (poor usability, reduced home value) often outweighs the expense of renovation.

The Vision: European Simplicity and a Pop of Color

Sanchez drew inspiration from European kitchens she encountered abroad. She wanted panel-ready appliances, clean lines, hidden storage, and an overall minimalist aesthetic. The focal point was always going to be a custom pink island, intended to inject energy and personality into the space. This is a growing trend: homeowners are increasingly prioritizing kitchen design as a central element of their home’s aesthetic appeal.

The Transformation: Opening Up and Brightening Up

Working with Amanda Hilton Interior Design and Griffel’s Custom, Sanchez opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a more open flow. Appliances and cabinets were installed along one wall, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Collingwood color. The island, the star of the show, was finished in Benjamin Moore’s Rose Silk.

South-facing windows were preserved, providing abundant natural light that complements the new design. The result is a space that feels both modern and inviting.

The Verdict: A Kitchen Worth Loving

Sanchez describes the finished kitchen as perfect, highlighting the soft curves of the island and hood fan, as well as the overall color scheme. The renovation not only modernized a dated space but transformed it into a functional, aesthetically pleasing heart of the home.

“There truly isn’t one thing I would change. I love the space, the soft curved lines of the island and hood fan, and most importantly, the color and design. It feels perfect for our family.”

The project demonstrates how strategic renovation can breathe new life into even the most neglected spaces, making them both beautiful and practical.
